"We Shall Never Surrender"

上路以前尾葵姑娘进行了大量的案头工作，总结的攻略打印出来有数十页。不知道是她取舍的原因，还是先行者们足迹未至，攻略里没有包括我最喜欢的地方之一：Kew Gardens。虽然这里的某些部位还是过于雕琢，象法国的园林了，不过整体上还是绿得那么英格兰。

这次跟我以前每次去不同的是，走累了以后没有回去乘地铁——其实今年夏天伦敦到处在修路，地铁的运行也受到影响。从Kews出来要先坐几站公共汽车才能换乘地铁——我们决定坐船回市中心。在泰晤士河上小小的码头等候，过了一会，一艘不大的、很旧的船开过来，船上居然没有固定的座位，就是几十把折叠椅在甲板和船舱里一排一排地摆着。阳光灿烂的天气里，甲板的座位早就被先前在穿上的乘客占满了。于是我们走进船舱，坐在第一排。猛一抬头，看到了这面铭牌，差一点叫出声来：



铭牌的旁边镶在镜框里的是一张1940年5月31日的的头版，其中一篇文章的题目是"Tired, Dirty, Hungry, they came back--unbeatable"。

去船舱后面的吧台买酒，顺便向酒保求证。他说，这确实是当年前往Dunkirk救援的民用船只之一。在Westminster码头下船的时候给它留个影，就是这么不起眼的一艘船，将近70年以前却有着那么不同寻常的历史。可是过后，又象当年几百艘别的民用船只一样，回到从前的生活，该打渔的打渔，该载客的载客，而在英吉利海峡的壮举似乎不过是周末出去喝了杯酒一样的平常。后来英文里就有了一个词叫Dunkirk spirit。如果要在当代找一个这种精神的例子，记得2005年7月7日么？伦敦地铁遭到恐怖袭击，被困的乘客排着队从隧道往外走，没有惊慌失措，没有拥挤踩踏，有的是搀扶老人和女士上台阶。



记得史书上说，当时邱吉尔亲自要求必须同时救援被困的英军和法军。行动结束的当天，邱吉尔在国会发表了那篇著名的演说：

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
